Whirlpool Corporation is the world's largest home appliance manufacturer, producing products under brands including Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag (post-2006), Amana, Jenn-Air, Roper, Estate, and Inglis. All of these brands share the same serial number format, making it straightforward to decode across the entire product family.
The serial number encodes two key pieces of information: the year of manufacture as a single letter, and the week of that year as a two-digit number. On a 9-character serial, the year letter is the second character and the week digits immediately follow. On a 10-character serial, the year letter is the third character.
Whirlpool uses a 30-year repeating cycle for year codes, meaning the same letter can represent two possible manufacture years exactly 30 years apart. When both years are shown, use the appliance's physical condition, design features (such as a digital display or control style), or any purchase records to determine the correct decade. To reduce misreading, Whirlpool deliberately skips the letters I, O, Q, and V in its year code sequence.
The serial number is on a paper or foil label, usually displaying both "Model" and "Serial" fields. Locations by appliance type:
Ignoring the 30-year cycle. If the decoded year seems wrong by 30 years, the alternate year is almost certainly correct. Cross-reference with the appliance's design era β digital controls, stainless finishes, and LED lighting are hallmarks of post-2000 units.
Using the wrong brand option. If your appliance says KitchenAid, Maytag (made after 2006), Amana, or Jenn-Air, select the matching brand in the decoder β they all use compatible formats. For Maytag appliances made before 2006, use the Pre-2006 Maytag option instead.
Confusing model and serial numbers. Both appear on the label. The serial number is the unique identifier used for dating; the model number describes the product features. Confirm you're reading from the "Serial" line.
