How LG Encodes Manufacture Dates

LG Electronics uses a compact serial number format that encodes the manufacture year and month within the first three characters of the serial string. The same format is used across LG home appliances and LG televisions, making it consistent across the product range.

Year encoding: The first character of an LG serial number is a single digit (0–9) representing the last digit of the manufacture year. For example, a "3" indicates a year ending in 3: could be 2003, 2013, or 2023.

Month encoding: Characters 2 and 3 form a two-digit month code (01 through 12), corresponding to January through December.

Because a single digit encodes the year, LG year codes repeat every 10 years. When decoding, the tool will display the most likely year based on the serial structure. Use the appliance's physical condition, technology generation, and any known purchase history to confirm the correct decade when two years are plausible.

Where to Find Your LG Serial Number

  • TVs: Sticker on the back panel, or in Settings β†’ All Settings β†’ General β†’ About This TV
  • Refrigerators: Inside the fresh food compartment β€” upper wall or ceiling
  • Top-Load Washers: Under the lid, on the rim of the tub opening
  • Front-Load Washers: On the frame around the door opening
  • Dryers: On the door frame or back panel
  • Dishwashers: Inner edge of the door, left side when open
  • Ranges: On the oven door frame or rear panel

Common Mistakes When Decoding LG Serials

Decade confusion. This is the most common issue with LG serial numbers. If the decoded year is 10 years off from when you expected the appliance to have been made, the alternate decade is correct. For example, a decode showing 2013 for an appliance you believe was purchased around 2003 means the correct year is actually 2003.

Confusing the model number with the serial number. LG model numbers typically begin with letters that describe the product type (e.g., LRMVS3006S). The serial number starts with a digit β€” the year code. If the first character is a letter, you may be reading the model number instead.

Choosing the wrong product category. LG appliances (refrigerators, washers, etc.) and LG TVs are decoded under different tabs. Select Appliances for household appliances and Electronics for TVs and monitors.
