Professional Equipment Age Dating
🔌 Works for appliances, water heaters, and electronics β TVs, computers, phones, and any brand not listed in the tabs above.
Find the manufacture date of your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or iPod from its serial number.
Select Apple in the Electronics tab and enter your serial number for an instant manufacture date result.
⚡ Open Apple DecoderApple equipment typically displays the model and serial data tag on a manufacturer rating plate. Look for a label that lists "Model" and "Serial" and check common locations by product type: inside doors, behind access panels, on the back panel, or near the compressor / condenser area.
Apple uses two distinct serial number formats depending on the device's production era.
Legacy format (pre-2021) β 12 characters: The 4th character encodes the manufacture year using a letter code, and the 5th and 6th characters encode the production week. For example, the year code G represents 2011, and a week code of 27 indicates approximately late June or early July. Some year codes β C and D β each map to two possible years one decade apart, requiring the device's physical condition or model lineup to confirm the exact year.
Randomized format (post-2021) β 10 characters: Starting around 2021, Apple transitioned to randomly generated 10-character serial numbers that do not encode any manufacture date information directly. If your serial number is exactly 10 characters, the decoder cannot extract a date from it. In this case, use the Smart Lookup section with your model identifier (the A-number on the device label, such as A2341) to estimate the production era.
Entering a 10-character serial and expecting a date. Post-2021 Apple serials are randomized and contain no date information. If the decoder flags your serial as randomized, use the Smart Lookup with the model number instead.
Confusing the model number with the serial number. The model identifier (A2341, A2342, etc.) is a separate field from the serial number on the device label. The serial number is the alphanumeric string typically starting with a letter like C, D, F, G, H, or another code character.
Year code ambiguity for C and D. The letters C and D each represent two possible years (2010 or 2020). For a device that appears to be older, the earlier year is more likely; for a device with modern features, the later year is correct.
