How Sony Encodes Manufacture Years

Sony Bravia TVs — and Sony televisions generally — encode the model year in the last letter of the model number, not in the serial number. The serial number alone does not reliably encode a manufacture date for Sony TVs. Instead, locate your model number on the back of the TV or in your settings menu, and note the final letter.

The suffix letter map is: H = 2020, J = 2021, K = 2022, L = 2023, M = 2024, N = 2025. For example, a Sony TV with model number XR65A90K ends in K, indicating a 2022 model year. The letter I is skipped in the sequence to avoid confusion with the digit 1.

The model number for Sony TVs follows a structured pattern: screen size, panel series, and then the model year suffix. The decoder extracts the final letter from whatever you enter, so you can enter the full model number directly.

Where to Find Your Sony Model and Serial Number

  • Model number: Sticker on the back of the TV, visible from the rear of the unit
  • Settings: TV settings menu → About → Device info (shows both model and serial)
  • Remote: Pressing the Help button on many Bravia remotes opens device info directly
  • Serial number: Same rear label — typically begins with a letter and numbers, but does not encode the year

Common Mistakes When Decoding Sony TV Years

Entering the serial number instead of the model number. Sony serial numbers do not encode the manufacture year. Always enter the model number (found on the back label or in the settings menu) to get a year result.

Older Sony TVs (pre-2020). The H–N suffix system applies to 2020 and newer Sony TVs. Older models use a different suffix scheme. For TVs manufactured before 2020, use the Smart Lookup section with the full model number for research.

Confusing model year with manufacture year. Sony's model year suffix reflects the product release year, which typically aligns closely with the manufacture year. A TV with suffix K (2022) was designed and primarily manufactured in 2022, though individual units could be produced slightly before or after that year.

Pre-2020 Sony TVs: For models ending in letters before H (e.g., E, F, G), use the Smart Lookup with your full model number to research the production era.
