How GE Encodes Manufacture Dates

GE (General Electric) appliances encode the manufacture date using a two-letter system embedded within the serial number. Two specific character positions represent the month and year of manufacture using letter codes β€” rather than readable numbers β€” according to a consistent lookup table that GE has used across its product lines for decades.

This format applies to all GE-branded appliances as well as GE Profile, GE Cafe, GE Monogram, and Hotpoint products, which share the same serial number encoding convention. The serial number itself is typically 9–12 alphanumeric characters. Not every character encodes the manufacture date β€” some identify the production facility or assembly sequence.

Because the letter codes are not readable at a glance, a decode lookup is required to convert them to a calendar month and year. The decoder above handles this instantly.

Where to Find Your GE Serial Number

GE appliances display the serial number on a white or silver data label, typically showing both a "Model No." and "Serial No." field. Locations by appliance type:

  • Refrigerators: Inside the fresh food compartment, on the upper left or right wall
  • Dishwashers: Inner left edge of the door β€” visible when the door is fully open
  • Ranges and Wall Ovens: On the frame around the oven door opening, or the back panel
  • Top-Load Washers: Under the lid, on the rim of the door opening
  • Front-Load Washers: On the frame around the door opening
  • Dryers: Inside the door frame, or on the back panel
  • Microwaves: On the interior ceiling or side wall of the cavity

Common Mistakes When Decoding GE Serials

Using the model number instead of the serial number. Both are printed on the GE data label. The model number describes the product line; the serial number identifies your specific unit and contains the date information. Always copy from the "Serial No." field.

Misreading similar characters. GE serial numbers may include characters that look alike on older or faded labels β€” such as "O" and "0," or "I" and "1." If a decode returns an unexpected result, verify each character carefully.

Entering a partial serial number. The full serial number is required for an accurate decode. Partial entries will typically return an error or incorrect result.

Selecting the wrong GE sub-brand. GE Profile, GE Cafe, and GE Monogram each appear as separate options in the decoder. Select the one that matches the label on your appliance for the best result.
